The sword of the day is the halberd.
This polearm was used historically by guards in many places across Europe, for a few different reasons. The head was relatively inexpensive to produce, tall, and quite distinctive, so with every guard carrying one it served as a badge of office. In case an area needed to be sectioned off, the weapon could be either held sideways, for a cordon of sorts, or forward by a group of guards, essentially creating a pike line. The axe head can also be used to push, as well as giving every guard a fire axe in cities that largely lacked fire-suppression systems. Today, the halberd is still carried in a ceremonial capacity by the Swiss Guard in the Vatican.
